The Breast Lift in Detail

All breast surgery takes place at the Operationszentrum Wetzikon near Zurich. A mastopexy usually takes 1.5 to 3 hours, under general anaesthesia. With our experienced anaesthetists and skilled surgeons, you are in the best hands.

Lifting and Shaping the Breast

The incisions are made in a way to make the scars as unnoticeable as possible. In case of a smaller breast lift, excess skin is removed and the nipples are positioned higher, to create an aesthetic overall appearance. Simultaneous reduction of the areola is also possible. If more extensive lifting is necessary, additionally excess breast tissue will be removed and the remaining tissue will be reshaped. The result is a firm bust that looks significantly rejuvenated. ​

Simultaneous Breast Augmentation

If you desire volume enhancement, silicone implants or fat tissue can be used for a breast augmentation without the need for additional incisions. We will discuss this during the consultation. If volume enhancement with fat tissue is desired, additionally a liposuction will be performed.

Completion of the Mastopexy

At the end of the operation, we check for symmetry and bleeding. The wound is closed in three layers of sutures. No two breasts are identical, and although differences afterwards are often less visible than before the operation, small asymmetries may still be present. The incisions are covered with a plaster. Drainage tubes for draining wound fluid are very rarely – almost never – needed. When needed, they can usually be removed after 2-4 days.

No hospital stay required

We know our patients feel most comfortable at home (and heal best there too!) and you are allowed to go home the same day. Most patients can be picked up after only a few hours. You can not actively participate in traffic on the day of surgery. And once at home, we recommend that the first night you are not alone.

Aftercare and Healing Process

• From day 1, you may move your arms in all directions, as long as it is pain-free.

• Depending on your profession, you may not be able to work for 1 – 2 weeks.

What Pain Can Be Expected After a Breast Lift?

Most patients report mild to moderate pain, which can be adequately treated with oral pain medication and improves quickly after 2 – 3 days. Upon discharge from the clinic, you will be provided with pain medication for the first 5-7 days to take home.

How to Sleep After the Operation?

In the first few weeks after the operation, we recommend sleeping on your back. Avoid lying on your stomach in the first 3 – 6 months so that your scars can heal and mature smoothly.

When can you start scar care?

After 3 – 6 weeks, your incisions no longer need wound dressings or plasters. Now you can start treating your scars. We recommend, for example, Bepanthen scar ointment, twice daily. The scars will be red the first few weeks. Over the course of several months, they will fade. Scar healing and the entire healing process vary individually. Scar formation disturbances are rare and can often be improved with conservative treatment (silicone patches, microneedling), so that an operative correction is rarely necessary.

Risks and Possible Complications of a Breast Lift

Every surgical procedure carries inherent risks, and this also applies to mastopexies. Qualified medical care, a precise surgical technique, and careful preoperative and postoperative care are crucial to minimize these risks. While serious complications after a breast lift are very rare, it is important to be aware of these potential risks and to consider them in decision-making. Specific risk factors include:

• Bleeding: The possibility of bleeding after the procedure, which may require additional interventions.
• Bruising: Breast operations are invasive procedures. Bruising is normal, it resolves on its own, and usually does not require treatment.
• Infections: As with any surgery, there is a risk of bacteria entering and causing infections, which can delay recovery and necessitate further treatments. Infections become noticeable because of redness, pain, warmth, and possibly fever and are treated with antibiotics. Rarely, a reoperation may be necessary.
• Pain: After the operation, patients may experience some pain, which can usually be well handled with pain medication. If severe pain occurs, it is advisable to seek contact.
• Wound healing problems: These can occur, especially in women who smoke. Good wound healing depends on adequate blood flow, so please refrain from smoking, starting 2 weeks before to 6 weeks after the surgery. If necessary, nicotine can be replaced with nicotine patches or tablets. In case of wound healing problems, the wound may need to be sutured again.
• Changes in nipple sensation: After breast lift surgery, temporary or permanent (rarely) changes in nipple sensitivity may occur.
• Blood circulation disorders of the nipple: Can lead to loss of pigmentation or scarring. Severe blood circulation disorders, leading to tissue loss, are very rare.
